Placer County, California Inmate Search

The Placer County inmate search provides public access to information about individuals currently detained at the Auburn Jail or the South Placer Jail in Roseville. In Placer County, local police departments, including the Roseville and Rocklin Police Departments, do not operate long-term detention facilities. Officers transport arrested individuals to the county jail system overseen by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Through its Department of Corrections, the Sheriff’s Office oversees countywide jail operations and maintains the public inmate search.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office jail roster portal provides public access to information, including:

  • The inmate’s full name
  • Booking number or inmate ID
  • Booking date
  • Current custody status
  • Charges
  • Housing location (Auburn Main Jail or South Placer Jail)
  • Bond or bail information (if applicable).

When the Sheriff’s Office transfers individuals sentenced to state prison out of county custody, they no longer appear in the county inmate search; California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) manages their records through its statewide Incarcerated Persons Locator. Individuals charged with or convicted of federal crimes are placed in Bureau of Prisons facilities and may appear in the BOP’s nationwide inmate locator after transfer from local custody.

How to Use the Placer County Jail Roster

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office operates an online public inmate search that allows the public to locate individuals currently held in county custody. The system updates regularly and displays booking details, charges, and bail information. To use the search portal, users should:

  • Visit the Placer County Sheriff’s Office website, navigate to the Jail and Inmate Information section, and select "Who’s In Custody".
  • Enter the inmate’s information into the designated fields, click "Search," and select the correct individual from the results to review the inmate record.

What Information is Included in the Placer County Inmate Roster

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Roster provides information on current inmates, with public access governed by the California Public Records Act (CPRA) (California Government Code §§ 7920.000-7931.000), which allows certain records to be withheld or redacted under legal exemptions. The Who’s In Custody portal typically displays the following inmate details:

  • Full legal name
  • Booking number or inmate ID
  • Booking date and time
  • Current custody status (in custody, released, or transferred)
  • Legal charges
  • Housing location or facility (Auburn Main Jail or South Placer Jail)
  • Bail or bond amount ,(if applicable)
  • Court schedule (when available).

Some inmate roster information may be restricted, redacted, or unavailable. These include:

  • California law (AB 1475 and SB 1222) restricts posting mugshots for non-violent crimes, so they are often excluded from public online rosters
  • Home addresses and phone numbers are never publicly disclosed to protect privacy
  • Juvenile Records are confidential and typically will not appear on the adult jail roster
  • Under Marsy’s Law, identifying information about victims in sensitive cases may be redacted from public arrest logs
  • Medical or mental health information.

How to Send Money to an Inmate in Placer County Jails

Placer County manages inmate money deposits for both the Auburn Main Jail and South Placer Jail through a centralized system. The Sheriff’s Office designates funds for commissary use only, does not allow transfers between inmates, may place temporary holds for administrative or disciplinary reasons, and generally does not issue refunds.

Placer County allows the public to deposit money for inmates using several methods:

  • Online Deposits: An approved third-party provider requires the inmate’s name and booking number, accepts debit or credit cards, and typically charges service fees.
  • Jail Lobby Kiosks: Both the Auburn Main Jail and the South Placer Jail provide kiosks that accept cash and debit or credit cards. Card users should enter a billing address that matches the one on their bank account to avoid declined transactions.
  • By Phone: Deposits can be made by calling (866) 394-0490.
  • Mail: The public can send U.S. Postal money orders or cashier’s checks payable to the inmate’s full name and booking number. Personal checks are not accepted.

Inmate Search by Jail Facility

Placer County organizes inmate information by detention type, with the Sheriff’s Office managing adult inmates and other departments maintaining specialized rosters. The public can search for inmates at the Auburn Main Jail or South Placer Jail by name or booking number using the Sheriff’s Office Public Inmate Search portal. The Sheriff’s Office also maintains a 10-Day Press Log for recent arrests that have not yet been processed into the main roster. Alternatively, individuals can request inmate information directly from the Sheriff’s Office or the jail.

California law strictly protects information about minors at the Placer County Juvenile Detention Facility, and the public jail roster never includes it. Only legal guardians or authorized attorneys may access this information. They are required to make inquiries in person with valid photo identification at the Juvenile Detention Center in Auburn or by calling (530) 886-4850. Additionally, the status of individuals in work release programs is generally not public, and official inquiries should be directed to the Placer County Probation Department.

Placer County Visitation Rules and Schedules

Inmate visitation at the South Placer Jail includes both on-site video terminals and remote options. This is approved for family members, friends, and legal representatives.

Who can visit

Friends and family on the approved visitor list may visit, and minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Additionally, visits are restricted for recent inmates, certain convicted felons without approval, or individuals subject to no-contact orders.

Identification and Approval Requirements

Visitors are required to schedule visits 24 hours in advance, arrive 30 minutes early, and present a valid government-issued photo ID; some recently expired IDs may be accepted if the photo still matches.

Dress Code and Behavior

The jail enforces a strict dress and behavior policy, banning revealing clothing, offensive logos, and most types of headwear. Limits visitors to bringing only an ID and one car key, and immediately terminates visits for disruptive behavior.

Visit Duration and Schedule

The jail limits visits to 30 minutes, allows inmates about two visits per week, and schedules visiting hours from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. based on housing units and the dayroom schedule. Visitors are required to schedule visits at least 24 hours in advance, with free in-person video visits and paid remote video visits available for approximately $9.99.

For additional visiting information, call the South Placer Jail at (916) 409-8100.
